4 steps for a more peaceful morning

How did your start your day today? Were you in a rush to get out the door, stressed from the moment you woke up with thoughts rushing towards you of everything that needed to be accomplished today? Maybe you've been waking up like this for so long that you've forgotten there's another possibility: to have a peaceful and calm morning that sets that pace for a more relaxed and happy day.

Here are four adjustments you can make starting tomorrow to start loving your mornings:

  1. Rather than start your day with the shrill ringing of an alarm clock, set your phone to play something that will soothe you into awakeness. Maybe you'd like to open your eyes to the melodies of Frederic Chopin, or the crooning of Sade. 
  2. Have a nutritious breakfast. One of the worst things you can do for your health and diet is to skip breakfast completely. Ideally, you can spare ten minutes to have a bowl of healthy cereal, toast, or whatever your preferred daily repast. 
  3. Drink your coffee or tea at home in a relaxed pace rather than running out the door with a to-go cup. The quality of sitting down, sipping your morning beverage can help bring about a calm state of mind as you start the day. Running out the door will only set a frenetic pace for the rest of the day.
  4. Spend fifteen minutes in meditation.  I know what you're thinking: I'm always in a rush in the mornings! I don't have fifteen minutes to do nothing! But those fifteen minutes have the power to completely transform your entire day, helping you to be centered and make wiser decisions. Would it be that difficult to go to sleep fifteen minutes earlier the night before and wake up fifteen minutes earlier? What little change could you make for a big difference in your day?
