Read on about the benefits of merino wool socks below.

Benefits of Merino Wool

The extraordinary benefits of merino wool come from special sheep in Australia and New Zealand whose fleece is finer and softer than that of other sheep. Nature is often the best designer and the fleece of merino sheep is temperature regulating, meaning that the sheep are able to stay warm in sub-zero temperatures while staying cool in the summer.

1. Naturally breathable

Wool fibres are naturally breathable. They can absorb large quantities of moisture vapor (sweat) and allow it to evaporate, making wool garments feel less clingy and more comfortable than garments made from other fibers. In contrast to synthetics, wool is an active fibre that reacts to changes in the body’s temperature, keeping your feet comfortable. Basically merino wool socks are like the goldilocks of socks - they keep your feet not too hot, not too cold, just right.

2. Better for the environment

If you're concerned about the huge amount of pollution and waste produced by the fashion industry then you'll want to support the manufacture of natural materials like wool. Many cold weather accessories today are made of cheap acrylic, which is a synesthetic plastic derivative. Acrylic is responsible for ocean pollution as microfibers leech out from the washing machine into the water systems. Wool, on the other hand, is a natural fiber and has been used for thousands of years to keep people warm.

3. Wool is good for the skin

Recently published research in the British Journal of Dermatology has demonstrated that wearing superfine Merino wool next to the skin is therapeutic for eczema sufferers. This adds to a growing number of research findings supporting the health and wellbeing benefits of superfine Merino wool. The research has shown that Merino wool assists those suffering from this chronic skin condition, challenging misconceptions that all wool is prickly and itchy. In addition, those with Raynaud's disease will find that merino wool fiber provide some of the warmest possible socks and are great for wearing to bed.

4. Wool is naturally odor-resistant and anti-bacterial

The wooly coat of the merino sheep has a waxy coating on every single fiber called Lanolin. This oily, wax coating helps merino sheep repel water during rainy months and guards against infections.

In turn, the yarn used to make Merino wool clothing maintains some of this residual Lanolin which continues to act as a safeguard against mildew, mold and odor causing bacteria.

Because of this, wool socks don't need to be washed as often as cotton socks if they're not being subjected to heavy-duty sweat. At the same time, their odor-resistance makes them a great choice for hikers and backpackers who have limited space their bags.
